Several Killed as Projectiles Strike Refugee Camps on Sudan-Ethiopia Border

Sudan's Interior Ministry said Sunday that several people were killed and others wounded when projectiles struck refugee camps along the Sudan-Ethiopia border during clashes between Ethiopian government forces and fighters from the Tigray region.

According to the ministry, major fighting broke out early Saturday between Tigray regional forces and the Ethiopian army near the shared border, with projectiles landing inside multiple refugee camps and causing casualties. The ministry did not provide a specific death toll.

Sudan's Commission for Refugees said it was tracking the situation with serious concern, noting that the border area functions as a key transit and reception zone for people fleeing Ethiopia, and that the ongoing military buildup could trigger a further wave of refugees while heightening both security and humanitarian risks.

The commission called on international and regional bodies, the UN, and humanitarian organizations to help promote peace and stability in the region and to ensure refugees are protected. It also urged the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to keep conditions from worsening further, and said it would continue monitoring refugees' welfare alongside its partners while working to meet their basic needs.

Ethiopian media outlets reported that the fighting between federal forces and Tigrayan fighters represents the most serious escalation between the two sides since a peace deal was signed nearly four years ago.

That agreement, brokered by the African Union, was signed by the Ethiopian government and Tigray forces in South Africa on November 2, 2022. It called for an end to the war, a lasting ceasefire, the disarmament of Tigrayan fighters, and the restoration of federal government authority over the region.
