Terms of Service

These terms govern your use of hornreporter.com and any related services we operate (together, the “Site”). By using the Site you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

In these terms, “Horn Reporter”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the publisher of the Site; “you” means the person using it.

1. Reading the Site

Reading Horn Reporter requires no account, no registration and no payment. You may read, link to and share our articles freely, subject to the copyright terms in section 5.

2. Accounts

Accounts exist only for editorial staff and invited contributors. There is no public registration, and we do not create reader accounts.

  • Access is granted by invitation. An account is created the first time an invited email address signs in successfully.
  • Sign-in is passwordless: we email a one-time code to your address and you enter it to sign in. There is no password to set, share or lose.
  • Sign-in codes are personal to you. Do not forward them, and do not let anyone else use your account. Tell us immediately at contact@hornreporter.com if you believe your email account or your access has been compromised.
  • You are responsible for what is published from your account. We may suspend or withdraw access at any time, in particular where these terms or our Editorial Policy have been breached.

3. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the Site for any unlawful purpose, or in a way that infringes anyone else’s rights;
  • attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Site, its accounts, its servers or any connected system, or to probe or test its security without our written permission;
  • scrape, crawl or harvest content or data at a volume or rate that interferes with the Site’s operation, or in circumvention of any technical restriction;
  • use our content to train machine learning or generative AI models without our prior written consent;
  • introduce malware, launch a denial-of-service attack, or otherwise disrupt the Site or its infrastructure;
  • impersonate Horn Reporter, its journalists or its contributors, or misrepresent your affiliation with us;
  • republish our content in a way that alters its meaning or falsely attributes material to us.

4. Content on the Site

We publish in three sections — News, Analysis and Perspectives — and the distinction between them matters. Perspectives pieces are the opinion of the named author and are not statements of Horn Reporter’s position. Analysis reflects the author’s judgement as well as their reporting. Our Editorial Policy explains each in full.

We work to publish accurate journalism and we correct errors when we find them, but the Site is provided for general information. Nothing on it is legal, financial, medical, security or other professional advice, and you should not act on it as though it were. Reporting on fast-moving events reflects what was known at the time of publication.

5. Intellectual property

All articles, photographs, video, audio, graphics, the Horn Reporter name and the Horn Reporter logo are owned by us or by our contributors and licensors, and are protected by copyright and trade mark law.

You may, without asking us:

  • read, print and store copies of our articles for your own personal, non-commercial use;
  • quote a short extract for the purposes of news reporting, criticism, review or comment, provided you attribute it to Horn Reporter and link to the original article;
  • share links to our articles anywhere.

You may not republish an article in full, sell or syndicate our content, or use our name or logo to imply endorsement, without our written permission. For syndication and reprint enquiries, write to contact@hornreporter.com.

6. Material you send us

If you send us a pitch, an article, a photograph, a tip or any other material, you confirm that it is yours to send and that it does not infringe anyone else’s rights. Unless we agree otherwise in writing, you keep ownership of what you send and grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to publish, edit, translate, reproduce and archive it on the Site and in our promotion of it.

We may edit submissions for length, accuracy, clarity and legal risk. We are under no obligation to publish anything sent to us, and we cannot undertake to return or preserve unsolicited material.

7. Copyright complaints

If you believe material on the Site infringes your copyright, email contact@hornreporter.com with the URL, an identification of the work you say has been infringed, an explanation of the infringement, and your contact details. We investigate every complaint and will remove or attribute material where the complaint is well founded.

8. Links to other sites

Our articles link to third-party sites and documents. We do not control those sites, are not responsible for their content, and a link is not an endorsement. Their terms and privacy policies govern your use of them.

9. Availability

We aim to keep the Site available, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of the Site, including individual articles and features, at any time. We may also change these terms; the date at the top of this page shows the current version, and continued use of the Site after a change means you accept it.

10. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Site and its content are provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, and we exclude liability for any indirect or consequential loss, loss of profit, loss of data or loss of business arising from your use of the Site or reliance on its content.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

11. Privacy

Our handling of personal data is described in our Privacy Policy, and our use of cookies in our Cookie Policy. Both form part of these terms.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the courts of Ethiopia have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them or from your use of the Site. Nothing in this section deprives you of the protection of mandatory consumer law in your country of residence.
